Bellowing Giants
Yellowstone Bison Rut
Wildlife Photography Workshop

Capture Yellowstone’s bison during the rut

Workshop overview

August brings a different energy to Yellowstone’s grasslands. Mature bison bulls join the herds, their deep bellows carry across the valleys, and wallowing animals can send dust into the afternoon light. The rut offers opportunities to photograph both individual animals and the relationships that shape the herd.

Bellowing Giants is a small-group wildlife and landscape photography workshop built around those opportunities. We will spend four days observing bison, working with changing light and refining the skills that help you turn an encounter into a thoughtful photograph.

Our routes remain flexible. Rather than rushing through a fixed checklist of locations, we will work where animal activity, safe viewing positions and available light offer the strongest opportunities. Bison are the main focus, with landscape sessions and other wildlife encounters included as conditions allow.

Field Experience

What you will learn

  • Choose shutter speeds that suit walking animals, sudden movement and quieter portraits.

  • Set autofocus modes and tracking areas for wildlife in open grasslands.

  • Balance aperture and ISO when light changes or several animals share the frame.

  • Manage exposure for dark fur, pale grass and backlit dust.

  • Use herd spacing, clean backgrounds and environmental context to strengthen a composition.

  • Observe animal behavior while maintaining safe viewing positions.

  • Select images for a sequence that tells a story rather than repeating the same frame.

How the four days unfold

Day 1 establishes the foundations: camera setup, field safety, identifying useful light and working with the herd.
Day 2 develops movement and behavior photography.
Day 3 expands the visual story through wider compositions, landscape opportunities and different lighting conditions.
Day 4 focuses on refining your approach and identifying the images and techniques to build on after the workshop.

This is a flexible learning outline. We may revisit a productive area, spend extra time observing a quiet herd or adjust our route when wildlife activity changes. Particular behaviors, species and weather conditions cannot be guaranteed.

Where we photograph

Lamar Valley and other accessible areas with current bison activity are potential locations. Hayden Valley may also be considered when access, road conditions and travel time make it suitable. We will choose each day’s route from our Gardiner base rather than promise every area on every departure.

Frequently asked questions

Will we see bison fighting

Rut behavior may include bellowing, wallowing, tending cows and interactions between bulls. We photograph whatever occurs naturally. Fighting and other specific behaviors are not guaranteed, and we never provoke an animal to create a photograph.

How close will we get

We use long lenses and safe viewing positions. Yellowstone requires at least 25 yards from bison and at least 100 yards from bears and wolves. More distance may be needed for safety, and we move back when animals approach.

Do I need professional equipment

No. You should bring a camera you can control and a suitable telephoto lens. If you are unsure about your equipment, contact us before booking so we can discuss whether it fits the workshop.

Does the workshop involve hiking

Field sessions focus on permitted roadside and developed-area locations, with short walks where authorized. Uneven surfaces and periods of standing are possible. Please discuss mobility needs before booking.

Can I attend for one day

This workshop is designed as a complete four-day experience. Contact us about possible drop-in availability and pricing; a single-day place is not guaranteed.
