Antlers in the Tetons
Grand Teton Moose Rut
Photography Workshop
Capture bull moose, autumn habitat, and the Teton landscape
Workshop overview
In autumn, Grand Teton’s moose become a compelling subject for photographers willing to observe patiently. Bulls carry fully developed antlers, seasonal relationships change, and riverside vegetation can bring color and texture to the frame. The mountain setting adds opportunities to build a portfolio that connects wildlife with its habitat.
Antlers in the Tetons is a four-day wildlife and landscape photography workshop centered on moose during the rut. We will work on portraits, movement and environmental compositions while adapting each day to current sightings and safe access.
Moose may be partly hidden in vegetation or spend long periods resting. Those quieter moments are part of the experience. Instruction will help you work with obstructed backgrounds, subtle changes in posture and the exposure challenges of dark fur against a brighter setting.

How the four days unfold
Day 1 establishes camera settings, safe observation and the habitat-based approach to finding moose.
Day 2 develops portraits and behavior photography.
Day 3 combines wildlife sessions with landscape opportunities when weather and light are useful.
Day 4 refines the techniques most relevant to your goals and helps you identify a stronger final image sequence.
This learning outline adapts to conditions. We may spend more time with a productive subject or move to landscape photography when wildlife is resting or unavailable. Sightings, rut behavior, fall color and clear mountain views cannot be guaranteed.
Where we photograph
We will assess permitted roadside and developed-area viewpoints near moose habitat, which may include the Gros Ventre area and accessible locations near Moose. Landscape opportunities may include established viewpoints along the Snake River and Teton Park Road when open. Locations depend on park access, closures, wildlife activity and the conditions of our authorization.

Frequently asked questions
Why is this workshop in autumn
The moose rut occurs in the fall. Late September and early October provide a suitable seasonal window for this workshop. Actual activity varies, so the itinerary follows the animals rather than a promise of particular behavior.
Will we photograph bulls sparring
Possibly, but sparring and other rut interactions are not guaranteed. Feeding, resting and moving animals can also provide strong photographic opportunities. We do not call, bait or approach animals to trigger a response.
How close will we get to moose
Grand Teton requires at least 25 yards from moose and other wildlife apart from bears and wolves, which require at least 100 yards. We may stay farther away and retreat when needed. We never stand between an adult and its young.
Can beginners participate
Yes. Instruction is adapted to your experience. Familiarity with your camera’s basic controls is helpful; contact us before booking if you would like equipment or preparation guidance.
How much walking is involved
We focus on authorized roadside and developed-area locations, with short walks where permitted. Terrain can be uneven and field sessions may involve standing. Discuss accessibility needs before booking.
Where should I stay
Jackson is the proposed workshop base. Confirm the designated meeting point before choosing accommodation. Local pickup arrangements will be explained with the final booking details.
